Sew pencil skirt with lining. Step 11, how to sew a hem?

First pin the vent extensions and the hem allowance together. Then mark the fold line of the vent overlap and underlap extensions. It means, use a ruler and a sliver of the soap, and draw horizontal lines, 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) away from the bottom edge of the extension. Please Note: Click on photo to see a larges size.

Then baste (blue thread) the vent extensions and the hem allowance together along the white fold line mark, then remove pins.



Then use a sewing machine and sew along the blue basting stitches. Then remove pins and blue basting thread. 



 
  

Then fold both vent extensions back.

Then baste (blue thread) both bottom edges of the vent extensions.

Then use a ruler and a sliver of the soap to create a hem fold line, it means draw horizontal lines, 1 1/4 inches (3 cm) away from the bottom edge of the skirt.


Then turn your skirt wrong side out. Then fold the hem allowance up along the hem fold line mark, and pin the fold in place.





Then baste (blue thread) the hem allowance and the skirt together, baste near the hem fold line mark.


Then remove pins.

Then finish the cut edge of the hem allowance with zigzag stitch or use serger/overlock machine.

  

 


  
Then place the hem allowance on the ironing board, and press the hem allowance from the right side of the skirt, use a moisture press cloth.

Then take a piece of heavy paper. Then place a piece of heavy paper in the middle of the skirt. Then pin hem allowance to the skirt piece again.








Then place a piece of heavy paper in the middle of the skirt again. Then baste (blue thread) the hem allowance and the skirt piece together again, baste near the finished edge of the hem allowance, and remove pins.
  







Then remove first blue basting thread. It means, the thread which is nearer to the hem fold line.







Then secure the hem allowance in place, hand stitches (white thread) along the finished edge of the hem allowance.








Then remove blue basting thread. Then place a piece of paper between the hem allowance and the skirt. 


Then press the hem allowance from the wrong side of the skirt, use a moisture press cloth. Then press (finish press) the hem allowance from the right side of the skirt, use a moisture press cloth.

Then pin each vent extension to the skirt back panel.




Then baste (blue thread) each vent extension and the skirt back panel together, baste along the finished edge of the vent extension, then remove pins.

Then sew the hem allowance and the vent extension together, sew along the finished edge of the vent extension. Use hand sewing needle and sewing thread.










Then remove blue basting thread. Then press the finished edges of the vent extensions from the wrong side of the skirt, use a moisture press cloth.
